ST. PAUL — Community members, advocates and state leaders gathered at the Minnesota State Capitol on April 27, 2026, for the third annual Somali Day. MPR News reported the gathering in the Capitol rotunda, and CBS Minnesota reported a morning news conference followed by a rally attended by more than 100 people.

Speakers described Somali Minnesotans’ contributions and raised concerns about the effects of federal immigration enforcement on families and businesses. CBS reported that 24 coalitions from organizations across the state took part. State lawmakers from both major parties attended, including Senators Zaynab Mohamed, Jim Abeler and John Hoffman, according to CBS.

MPR News interviewed Fartun Weli, the founder and chief executive of Isuroon, one of the supporting organizations. Speaking by phone rather than from the Capitol, she described outreach to legislators and the importance of sustained civic participation. The interview also addressed the effects of recent enforcement actions as she understood them.

The event offered visibility and a forum for advocacy. It should not be confused with a legislative vote or an enacted policy: neither account identifies a specific law passed as a result of the gathering.
