MINNEAPOLIS — The Somali Museum & Cultural Center has purchased a building on University Avenue Southeast as it works toward a larger permanent home. The Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal reported the $2.3 million purchase on September 2, 2026. MinneapoliMedia identified the property as 3430 University Ave. SE. The purchase is a step in a longer project, not an announcement that a new gallery has already opened.

On its mission page, the museum says founder Osman Ali began collecting artifacts of Somalia’s traditional nomadic culture in 2009. It says its collection now includes more than 1,500 artifacts and works by Somali artists, from everyday craftwork to paintings and sculpture. Its programs aim to connect generations while sharing Somali history and art with a wider public.

The museum’s own visitor page still directs guests to its existing space at 2925 Chicago Ave., Suite C, on the ground level of Midtown Exchange in Minneapolis. Readers planning a visit should consult that page rather than travel to the University Avenue property, which is not yet listed as open for admission.

The reporting describes a building acquisition, but the available public sources do not establish a new gallery opening date or construction timeline. The institution’s future exhibition plans remain a separate step from the purchase.
